News and Events Farewell to Jonathan At a tea party in the Vicarage Garden on Sunday afternoon 29th June, members of St.Mary's and St.Helen's churches said farewell to Jonathan Arnold and also to Emma, Katherine and Thomas at the end of Jonathan's three years as our Assistant Curate. Ian Cohen made a presentation to Jonathan as a token of the parish's appreciation. The family are not going far as Emma is to be the new Team Vicar at St.Mary's Church in Garsington. Parishioners watch as
Jonathan opens his parcel. Musical Weekend FORGET THE PROMS! FORGET GARSINGTON! A weekend full of fabulous music at your own doorstep ! (or rather church porch!) St Mary's Church very first music festival over the weekend 13th-15th June was a great success. On Friday evening the audience was treated to a memorable performance of both sacred and secular music by the chapel choir of Worcester College, Oxford. The choir is mainly made up of young students from the college and is run and conducted by undergraduate organ scholar George Castle. To give an idea of their talent, the choir will have recorded a CD of contemporary British choral music by the end of June. ![]() The Coffee Concert on Saturday morning featured the young, talented Canadian soprano Catherine Conway who gave a beautiful rendition (in German) of Schubert's Die schone Mullerin. This was followed by our very own baritone: the youthful Jonathan Arnold who performed works by JS Bach, Henry Purcell and John Downland. Accomplished teenage flute and violin players - Alice and Harriet Derbyshire , accompanied their father, Roger Derbyshire, on the piano. ![]() ![]() An evening of Folk Music was enjoyed on Saturday. Lee Gabel (again youthful and home grown) and Kate Saunders performed a selection of well known folk songs ending in a tribute to Sandy Denny (of Fairport Convention fame) who died thirty years ago. Second on stage were Harvey Rodda and Pete Orton who amused us (and the children in the audience) with comical folk songs from around the world. The highlight of the evening was the Wallingford based Tandara Mandara band who gave lively performances of traditional fiery Eastern European folk songs; Ben, the Fiddler, is incredibly gifted, handsome and young! ![]() Young-at-heart singers enjoyed singing highlights from Messiah on Sunday afternoon under Jonathan's conductorship accompanied by Roger and other local musicians. A gusty performance was given later in the afternoon - an excellent standard after an hour's rehearsal! The weekend was rounded off by a moving Taize service. A big thank you to Jonathan Arnold and Chris Tindall and their team, and all who worked so hard to make the weekend a success. We hope to have raised some £1600 for the life and work of the church.
