Harvest Music Weekend

hmw-w (105K) />

This will take place on Friday 24th, Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th September 2010

The programme is as follows

Friday 24th
8.00pm
Concert with the Choir of St.Mary's Church

Tickets £5

c-w (54K)

St Mary’s Church has a long history of providing music for services and there is photographic evidence of an established Church Choir in the 1920’s although no written evidence to say how far back it actually goes. In the 1980’s the choir boasted as many as 20 youngsters and visited Cathedrals and Churches in other Parishes as far afield as Scotland and Dorset. Now it has a regular membership of fifteen adults and sings a range of music from Tallis to Taverner and beyond.

Peter Hunt—Choirmaster. Peter’s musical career started at the age of six singing with his parents church choir in Scotland and at the age of nine he was awarded a place at the Cathedral Choir School of St Mary’s Edinburgh, where his musical education took off. He sang internationally with the Scottish Opera Chorus and Edinburgh Festival Chorus as well as a number of operatic and choral societies. After moving south in 1979, he took charge of St.Mary’s Choir in 1985. He has taught children to RSCM award winning standards and enjoys nothing better than setting the current choir the challenge of testing music.

Unfortunately Jim Greenan of Tandara Mandara is unable to perform this weekend so Ben Smith (fiddle) and Chris Gardner (double bass)will be performing part of their repertoire. They will make the evening a memorable one. As Tandara Mandara say “If the soulful sound of the fiddle over a cheeky bouncing rhythm doesn’t get your goat, well...we also have very nice shoes.”

Jenna Fentimen delighted the audience at her last appearance in St.Mary's and we look forward to seeing and hearing her again.

Troubshort and Turnipseed, aka Pete Orton and Harvey Rhodda are also favourites at St.Mary's having wowed the audience at our last music weekend.

Lee Gabel and Kate Saunders with Rhiannon Fentimen will be performing their versions of traditional and contemporary folk music and songs from the British Isles, with guitar, fiddle and voices. Lee and Kate have been favourites at St Mary’s for many years now having performed at both Amnesty International and St Mary’s Folk Concerts.
